finally ready to get custom cabinets?

If you are, you have come to the right place.  And this is a great time to take a look at all the different types of custom cabinets.  Before we jump into any of the custom features, in-cabinet options or functionality design...

It's best to settle on one or two different styles of cabinets first.  This part is usually pretty easy based on your style.  Whether your taste is more traditional and you prefer the classic inset, or you lean towards a cleaner, modern styled flat-panel look.  Take a look and you should be able to tell pretty quick which style custom cabinets you'll want in your home.

7 different kitchen cabinet style you'll love

  1. Shaker
  2. Louvered
  3. Thermofoil
  4. Inset
  5. Distressed
  6. Beadboad
  7. Flat-Panel or Slab

1. Shaker

This is one of the most popular trends in kitchen renovations today.  This simple, classic look works well for both contemporary or traditional designs.

When did the shaker style cabinets become popular?

This history stretches back the late 1700's during the American colonial era.  Following the religious idea of being humble and not too flashy.  With it's clean lines and functional aesthetic, the shaker style cabinet has found it's way into many kitchen remodel designs.

The flat panel door surrounded by rail frames,  sturdy design with high quality wood are trademark characteristics of the shaker style.  They are often left with natural showing of the high end wood grains common in the US.  Woods like hickory, maple, oak, and cherry are often used in making shaker cabinets.

2. Louvered

More commonly found on doors and windows, the louvered style cabinet has a very unique look and some practical features.  Typical louvered doors have horizontal wooden slats but for a more modern look you can also go vertical.  Louvered uppers that reach the ceiling creates a look like that's sure to catch the eye.

The louver wasn't originally designed for cabinets, it has it's roots in the middle-ages.  This crude design consisted of wooden slats placed in roof hole and positioned to allow cooking smoking to escape while keeping rain and snow out.

The louvered cabinet design has practical purpose in areas where there may be a heat source or used for drying closets.  More often though they are used for the unique look and style.

3. Thermofoil

These are space aged wonders and can come in most any color you want.  Thermofoil cabinets are made from MDF or medium-density fiberboard, then wrapped in flexible vinyl material.  This style and design is not only very durable but cost effective as well.

The thermofoil finish is very easy to keep clean and will not chip as often as paint will.  Going with a thermofoil finish will depend on your needs.  Being a molded material, they can be found all shapes and sizes and almost any color or pattern.  This cabinet style is moisture resistant and a breeze to keep clean.  Grease and oil wipe right up with no staining.

A coupe of drawbacks of thermofoil are the weight and heat resistance.  They tend to be on the heavier side and can be difficult to install.  Also, keep in mind that this is a plastic material and will not do well around heat.

If you are looking for a unique design touch in your next kitchen renovation that won't break the bank, choose thermofoil cabinets.

4. Inset
